On Tuesday, February 5th, Special Olympics Northern California hosted a “Breakfast of Champions” at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco. The event was well attended by thirteen members of the SFFD, including Chief of Department, Mario H. Trevino, the Mayor’s office, members of the SFPD and the San Francisco business community, Special Olympics athletes, staff and coaches. Chief Trevino recognized the Special Olympics for the organizations important societal contributions and graciously thanked his firefighters for their involvement in Special Olympics and their overwhelming presences. The Chief also offered his support for the Breakfast and looks forward to future Special Olympics events. The Breakfast highlighted upcoming volunteer and fundraising opportunities.

The SFFD and Special Olympics share in the desire to foster and support the special athletes in our community who have a mental handicap and disability. Special Olympics provides a year-round sports training and competition program for over 195 athletes in San Francisco. They will send 14 athletes to the State Winter games to be held at Kirkwood, Tahoe March 11 thru 14. The team will include alpine skiers, snowboarders, cross country skiers, and one snow shoeing participant.

In addition, the SF Special Olympics will be hosting the West Bay Regional Track and Field Competition on May 4, 2002 at Kezar Stadium.

The Special Olympics would like to offer a special thanks to the SFFD firefighters for their support and participation in the Athletic Program.
