Kennedy Mile
October 1, 2002
By Jim Gallagher
The Fall running season began with our annual SFFD ‘Kennedy Mile’ Championship. Weather was good: Sunny, moderate temperature in the low 60’s with mild westerly winds. San Francisco Firefighters were joined by a few members of the West Valley Joggers & Striders in 12th Annual Kennedy Mile Championship Race.

Mars Rivera (Station 16) took the lead from the start and extended the margin throughout the race to win the 2002 San Francisco Firefighter’s Mile championship in 4:38.7. Mars winning time eclipses Glenn Kircher’s age record for thirty-one year olds.

Andy Sobozinsky won Master Firefighter 2002 Mile Championship in 5:42.63. In addition to winning the Firefighter Master’s Kenney Mile Championship, Andy’s time earned him the Kennedy Mile age record for forty-two year olds. Joe Hallisy followed Andy with a time of 5:45.89 winning the Senior Firefighter 2002 Mile Championship. Later in the day, Jim Gallagher finished first in the Firefighter’s Grand Master Division in 7:00.35.

Our next event will be the annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at Lake Merced Parking Lot. All proceeds will be donated to the Firefighter’s Toy Program.
