TOY PROGRAM COLLECTS OVER $43,000 DOLLARS AND OVER 100 BAGS OF TOYS!
By Melissa Lerma
The San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program was approached by the Giants to hold a Toy Drive at the Tribute to Heroes Dodger game on September 11. The idea was to get the fans involved in a positive action on a day that was heartbreaking to everyone. The Giants donated 20,000 pins that were designed specifically to memorialize the anniversary of September 11. The Giants made announcements for the toy drive at games prior to September 11 and KNBR, the Giants radio station, also joined in by announcing the Toy Drive daily.

With off-duty firefighters requested to attend the Union Square memorial, it was up to the retired guys and family and friends of firefighters to handle the toy collection barrels and collect monetary donations. Over 50 volunteers came out to help. Giants’ fans arrived in droves anxious to trade in a toy or $5 for a pin. Everyone was friendly and appreciated the opportunity to donate to the Toy Program on such a significant day.
